/r/ Video Lesson 1
How to make the /r/ sound
It is helpful if you think of the Australian /r/ sound as a new sound you are learning. It doesn’t flick or roll, and it is different from the American /r/ sound. You simply lift your tongue in the middle of your mouth. If I said to you ‘lift your tongue so I can see under it”, that would be the position. Hold it in that position and make an /r/ sound. You lift the tip of your tongue up towards the highest part of the roof of your mouth- straight up, but don’t touch the roof of your mouth. Next you tighten the tip –bring the sides slightly in toward the middle- and hold it strong and say the /r/ sound.
