Hi, from Speak More Clearly!

In this training video, I’ll teach you the difference in pronunciation for 3 common words with an American, British and Australian accent.

1. The first word is privacy.

With an American accent it’s pronounced (play the video above to hear the pronunciation for each word):

 privacy    /ˈpraɪ.və.si/

And now in a sentence: His privacy was of utmost concern.

With a British accent it’s pronounced:

 privacy    /ˈprɪv.ə.si/

And now  in a sentence: His privacy was of utmost concern.

For Australian English it’s pronounced:

privacy /ˈpraɪvəsi/

And now in a sentence: His privacy was of utmost concern.

2. The second word is semi.

Said with an American accent it’s pronounced:

 semi     /ˈsem.aɪ/

And now I’ll put it in a sentence: The beans were only semi cooked by lunchtime.

Said with a British accent it’s pronounced:

semi    /ˈsem.i/

And now for the sentence: The beans were only semi cooked by lunchtime.

And said with an Australian accent:

semi /ˈsɛmi/

I’ll say it in the sentence: The beans were only semi cooked by lunchtime.

3. And the last word is mobile.

With an American accent it’s pronounced:

mobile /ˈmoʊ.bəl/

I’ll say a sentence with it now: They created a mobile clinic.

For the British accent it’s pronounced:

mobile   /ˈməʊ.baɪl/

And now in a sentence: They created a mobile clinic.

For the Australian accent it’s:

mobile        /ˈmoʊbaɪl/

And now for the sentence: They created a mobile clinic.
